Places to Visit:

Shropshire is one of the least crowded and most peaceful areas of England, one of the last remaining idylls waiting to be explored and enjoyed. There are many activities in the area, something to suit everyone but here are a few ideas to get you started when planning your stay.

Walking, hiking or strolling.

 You will be spoilt for choice as there is fantastic countryside waiting out there for you, many walks can be started at the lodge. The area has some fantastic country pubs and cafes making for a perfect end to any walk!

Montgomery (Our nearest town) is a beautiful Georgian market town with a 13th century castle. The town has a small market square with independent shops and cafes and a Michelin starred restaurant. The castle is free to look around and has beautiful views across the town.

Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd

From the top you can see for fifty miles in each direction, to get there you can drive, cycle, walk or jump on a horse! In the valley there are easier walking paths, orienteering, grass sledging and streams to dam!

Ludlow is a thriving medieval market town and an architectural gem. It has a lively community feel and is always busy with events and festivals. The town has a reputation for the quality of its food and drink with many excellent restaurants and cafes. Every September the town is host to the Ludlow food and drink festival.

The Stiperstones

The Stiperstones has ancient landscapes, old mines, rock climbing, whinburry picking and plenty of walks. The area is a great destination for exploration. The Bog centre (always makes the kids laugh) is handily placed to stop for a drink and cake.

Shrewsbury is one of England’s finest medieval market towns. The centre is packed with timbre-framed black and white buildings, steep narrow streets an alleyway. It has 600 listed buildings and a castle which is now a regimental museum. The River Severn loops around the town centre offering gentle riverside walks through beautiful parks or take a trip on the Sabrina pleasure boat. The town has an amazing range of independent shops and cafes.

Iron Bridge Gorge Museums

Ten award winning museums spread along the valley beside the River Severn. Experience life as it was over a hundred years ago at Blists Hill Victorian Town or enjoy a day at Enginuity, a hands on science and technology centre.

Hawkstone Park Follies

Hawkstone Park Follies is an historic woodland fantasy with cliffs, crags, caves, deep woods and a series of extraordinary monuments built over 200 years ago. The park is not open all year around so plaese check before heading off.

  • The nearest pub is the Miners Arms in Priest Western, a twenty minute walk. It's an utterly un gentrified local pub which welcomes families, they serve pizzas on a Wednesday night. The rest of the week it sells rolls and great scotch egg! Best for drinks and nibbles.
  • The Lowfield Inn, Marton is a short car journey away and does good food and has a large beer garden (01743 891313).
  • Bishops Castle has two good pubs, The Castle has the best beer garden and the Tunns probably the best food.

  • The Nags Head at Garthmyl (01686 640600) does lovely food and is a great place to stop if walking or cycling along the canal.
